Youth Options

Grade Level:           11-12
Length of Course:   1 or 4 Semesters      2 Credits/Year

Wisconsin's youth options program allows public high school juniors and seniors who meet certain requirements to take postsecondary courses at a UW institution, a Wisconsin technical college, one of the state's participating private nonprofit institutions of higher education, or tribally-controlled colleges. Approved courses count toward high school graduation and college credit.

The program opens the door to greater learning opportunities for motivated students considering a technical career, wishing to begin college early, or preparing themselves to enter the workforce immediately after high school graduation.

Under youth options, a student does not pay for a college course if the school board determines the course qualifies for high school credit and is not comparable to a course already offered in the school district. If approved by the school board, the student can receive both high school and college credit upon successful completion of the course. A student who successfully completes their high school graduation requirements earns a high school diploma regardless of whether the requirements were met while attending a high school or college.

Work Release

Grade Level:           12

In the Work Release program, students participate in work related activities. These activities are graded and students will receive credit and pay.

Students receive 1/2 credit for each period and quarter they participate.

For example: One student participate in the Work Release program for the last half of the day (2 periods) for the entire year (4 quarters). 2 periods x 4 quarters = 8 divided by 1/2 credit = 4 credits earned.

After Hours

The Afterhours program is designed to provide students with assistance on assignments that are normally completed during regular school hours.

The tutoring sessions serve 3 different purposes.

  • Assist students who need help with homework.
  • Provide structured tutoring services to students who may need it.
  • Offer an alternative time to make up credits.

The program is staffed each afternoon by two high school teachers, Monday through Thursday. Assistance is available on a walk-in basis. The Afterhours program is held in the high school Learning Lab where computers are available to students.

For students required to attend Afterhours, the staff will monitor the completion of assignments teachers inform the of staff that the student is missing or has yet to complete.
